Brittle made him smile

Earlier this week, Hub brought home some peanut brittle. Someone he had met at work makes and sells it and, after getting to know Hub, she had given him a couple bags to take home. The only problem is that Hub is allergic to peanuts. When I asked if he had explained his allergy to the woman, he grinned bashfully and said, "I didn't have the heart to tell her." So he gave one bag to me and one to his grandmother.

A few days later, I was standing in the kitchen crunching on some brittle and studying the sticky sweetness and the nuts and the golden color of it. Suddenly, it occurred to me that these peanuts were different than any I'd ever seen. In fact, they looked like pecans. As Hub walked into the room, I said, "These peanuts look like pecans," and held a piece up to his face.

He looked at it carefully and then, with a confused stare, picked up the bag and turned it over to read the label. It read, PECAN BRITTLE. Hub is not allergic to pecans and brittle has always been one of his favorite candies, but finding it without peanuts is rare. His grandmother used to make just plain brittle for him when he was younger.

Knowing this discovery had totally made his day, I held the piece up to his face again and asked playfully, "Want some?"

He bit into it and smiled like a kid on Christmas morning as the sweet candy danced across his taste buds. We stood there for several minutes crunching and giggling and admiring this rare woman, who dared to make brittle without peanuts. Anything that makes my husband smile like that has my vote. And, I have to admit, sharing it with him was much better than eating the whole bag alone.

  1. Now I'm smiling! This is so sweet! It was sweet of the lady to make it, and so sweet of Hubs not to say anything to her about his allergy and then look what happened! He got to have some anyway, so freaking sweet! :)
